Definition

Browser

An application, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, used to access the Internet and World Wide Web.

Browser window

An open instance of the browser application. You may link from one page to another within a browser window (e.g., when you expand a view). A separate browser window is opened when you access this Glossary, the Training Course, or view a document.

Click on

Use the mouse to move the cursor onto the item described and press and release the left mouse button once. Clicking selects an item or menu choice

Click and drag

Use the mouse to move the cursor onto an item and press and hold the left mouse button down while moving the mouse cursor to a new location.

Close

To close the browser window, click the X in the box in the upper right hand corner of the active window. A keyboard shortcut is to press ALT-F, then C.

Collapse

Collapse the view to show fewer items. When you collapse an item such as a Part, SubPart, or Heading, the items listed under that item are hidden. To collapse an item, click on the downward pointing twistie next to the item. A "collapse all" control is located on the Navigation Bar. Collapse all operates on all items in the view.

Copy

Click and drag to highlight the text you want to copy to the Windows clipboard, then press CTRL-C.

Database

A collection of files that store related information

Document

The basic "storage unit" in the RGL databases.

Drop-down

When you click a drop-down control, a menu of choices drops down (e.g., File menu at the top of this window)

Expand

Expand the view to show more items. When you expand an item in the view, such as a Part or Heading, the items under that item appear. To expand an item, click on the right-pointing twistie next to the item. An "expand all" control is located on the Navigation Bar. Expand all operates on all items in the view.

Field

Fields allow the data to be entered and stored.

Highlight

When you click on the item with the mouse, the background changes color or a frame appears around the item to show you which item you have selected. When you use "click and drag" to select text to be copied, all of the text is highlighted. Clicking again often removes the highlighting.

Hyperlink

On a web page, underlined text of a contrasting color that, when clicked, links you to a different web page

Navigation Bar

Located under the RGL Title Bar within a view, the Navigation bar contains the next, previous, expand all, and collapse all controls used to navigate through a view.

Navigation Pane

The part of the database on the left side of the screen that displays the available view titles. The navigation pane is the mechanism for moving between the views.

Paste

To paste text from the Windows clipboard, navigate to a word processing application, insert the cursor, then press CTRL-V.

Save

To save a copy of a document to your computer, click on File in your browser's Menu Bar, then select Save As.

Title Bar

The RGL Title Bar, located just under the browser's Menu Bar and toolbars displays the title of the database and view. E.g., "Current FAR by FAR Part" On most pages, the Title Bar contains controls to access the RGL Home page, the Glossary, the FAQ, and the Training course.

Twistie

The little green triangle that allows you to expand/collapse items in the view pane and inside documents.

View

A listing of documents in a database. A view groups, sorts, and selects, the documents in a database.

View pane

The view pane displays the list of items such as FAR Parts, Subparts, Headings, Amendments, and Sections.
